In defense of MFGG, Sonic Retro has for nearly 20 years made a name for itself as the destination for Sonic ROM hacking. It's not the only place you can find good hacks or hacking tools, but its wealth of information on the wiki and the forums + all of the budding research done on a daily basis by passionate fans has always meant that it has something going on actively and encourages people to stick around there to find that info out.
In that sense, MFGG kinda dropped the ball. There were so many times we could have capitalized on Mario-related ongoings, tried to keep ourselves relevant as the number one stop for Mario fangaming, but we didn't. Not helping matters was the several-years-long boogeyman that was "Nintendo fangames are a taboo subject", which is only just now seeing major pushback in mainstream circles of the internet. But so it goes...
