You can use Proton via Steam, and while I haven't tested it, it should work. Just add it as a non-Steam game. Using a VM isn't actually a very good way to experience the game on Linux, the readme should probably be updated on that.

This is a game that started development in the mid-2000s, and there's a lot of code that relies on things that current versions of GameMaker don't have. I have plans to replace certain components of GameMaker 8 that can cause compatibility issues (like controller support) but the plan right now is to stick with GM8 otherwise.
