Thanks for the tip @Mors, I followed the instructions of this repository to run Proton outside of Steam:

With that, I tried it again to run on Linux with Proton and this time worked, it even recognized my PS1 controller:

It would be quite difficult to port this game to GM Studio. I can't say it's impossible, but for now we're focusing on getting the remaining levels done and fixing bugs rather than experimenting with major architectural changes.
That's okay, I understand that the priority for the moment is to finish the levels and fix the bugs.
