There was one game engine I used, Game Creator 2D. Unfortunately, its for Android and IOS. I used to make games on that before transitioning to GameMaker.

It is made by a company called SilentWorks. It had both the full version and the free version. But the free version had resource limitations, and I couldn't use this version to publish my games.
It is technically a game engine, but u can't create a standalone executable and has a limited template-based system instead of a "freely make your own stuff" kinda thing you see in a typical game engine.
Alongside this, I also used PowerPoint to make games. It did include the Visual Basic scripting, but I didn't use it. I mostly used to make maze games and point-and-click thingy with that when I was a child back then.
