It's normal for GM games to take several seconds to launch, even on a powerful PC.
If you're noticing lagging when a new area loads, you might want to remove individual objects from the room one by one to make sure there's not an object with a performance issue. You may also want to see if loading audio affects performance - if you find performance improves when you don't play music, you might be able to get a performance gain by adjusting the compression/playback settings.
