Online multiplayer is a whole other beast of development that is a different branch of programming than game development. It also is such a huge task to undertake balancing it between cost, effectiveness, and appeal, that you start going into the realm of "I need x people to play this to make it feel worthwhile, but I can only attract that many if I have the money to run servers, which means payment, which means Nintendo will look at this." It'd be cool, but wholly unfeasible.
