Seems a few people radically misunderstood my post.

Traditionally, in the English language, "they" has usually been a plural pronoun, but in recent years there's been more tolerance for the use of "they" as a singular pronoun when the antecedent's gender is uncertain...

Though it is commonly employed in everyday English, it has been the target of criticism since the late 19th century.

I never said that the singular they is a recent invention, but it is true that for centuries, some grammarians have recommended against its use. Two of the most-cited "authorities" on grammar and usage in American English, the Associated Press Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style, recommend rewriting to avoid the singular they when possible.

Personally, I don't really mind the use of the singular they. It's been a part of the common lexicon for many years, and unlike most grammatically-questioned constructions, it serves a valid purpose that is not easily substituted.

@Kritter I'm pretty sure I've seen that comic before, although I can't recall where to find it either. I'm glad we don't have that problem on MFGG these days (and if we do, someone definitely needs to bring that to my attention!).
