Imo it didn't happen, it was a Virtual Reality created by the Phantom Ruby and so is the world in Sonic Forces. In a way, neither game really happened and the characters involved merely perceive these events.

I hate it, tbh, copout plots where they can conveniently forget it ever happened really annoy me.

I'm of the opinion at least some of it did due to the Law of Conservation of Detail. Simply put, they wouldn't have had the characters stress "it's Sonic from another dimension!!" if they didn't want us to know that and nothing happens in the game to directly contradict this, so it's not to set up a twist, I'd imagine.
