Some thoughts on the matter:
A character's actions must align with their qualities. Upon the introduction of a character with actions controlled by the player, the alignment may be maintained in either of two ways: to limit the character's qualities such that no action may be taken that conflicts with a personality trait, typically creating an everyman like Mario, or to limit the character's and thus player's options to the same end (there's no diplomatic option in Metal Gear).
