Imagine a fan game in the style of Sonic Mania that's just a love letter to Mario fans and references obscure Mario stuff. One of the worlds could be a city-themed world, and at certain spots in levels, you see some places in the background like the Starbean Cafe, printing presses for The Nintendo News and Koopa Kronicle, and the wrecking site from Wrecking Crew. One stage could be a re-imagining of the construction site from the Donkey Kong arcade game (with Donkey Kong as the boss, of course), and the end castle could be a movie theater with posters of those fictional movies (i.e. Kirby Story, Legend of Stafy, Kung-Fu Lakitu, On Golden Toad 2, The Toad Warrior, etc.).

What I mean is, instead of a 3D collect-a-thon platformer that takes place in an alternate "real world", it would be a 2D "point A to point B" platformer with pixel graphics that takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, but with actual new world themes, mechanics, and gimmicks mixed with traditional ones, similar to Sonic Mania.

Auction Lemon: My understanding is Super Mario Odyssey includes a lot of nods to previous Mario franchises. On the Zelda side of things, Breath of Wild alludes to a lot of previous Zelda games. I like it when video game franchises reference things - including obscure things - from previous games.

However, what I'm specifically referring to is fictional media that's supposed to be popular in the in-game universe of Mario games. For example, Super Paper Mario mentions a comic book series starring Wart from SMB2, and Mario Kart 8 has a poster
"advertising" a kung fu movie starring Lakitu. It would be fun to see someone make a fangame based on those concepts.
