For the last couple of years, I harboured a weird dislike of anime. It was probably due to Japan having some really.. weird standards for what is considered family friendly compared to other places. Now, I grew up watching some anime like Dragon Ball Z (not understanding anything that was going on in the plot), Doraemon, Mojako, Deltora's Quest (or at least JC said we saw it), and the classic seasons of the Pokemon anime. But it seems at some point I'd developed the mindset I described above, and eventually led me to make this tongue and cheek thread back in 2020.
But recently this year, I've actually decided to see some of the classic Studio Ghibli films for the first time, those being Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service (would've watched Totoro a little earlier but that didn't end up happening for some reason). Watching Totoro especially with JC and my parents made me realise how beautiful the Ghibli films really are, and I no longer have this dislike of anime. Mostly anyways... So in a nutshell it boils down to my thoughts now being this: ![]() ...so yeah y'all can talk about anime in this thread now since it's no longer the anti-anime thread
Castle in the sky is such a good film. If you want to watch another Ghibli film, I highly recommend When Marnie was There.
And yeah, I totally understand your earlier position on anime, I mainly stick with Ghibli most of the time.

Only Yesterday is a really neat little film, if a bit slow at times.
![]() Yeah that's really all that I have to say cause it has most of the other Studio Ghibli staples (great animation, breathtaking visuals etc etc) also sometimes the main character (in the Present scenes) looks a little older than the 27 year old she is stated to be (which is something the animators expressed concern for behind the scenes)

Apparently Hayao Miyazaki directed a music video once.

![]() Just saw Porco Rosso yesterday. It was a pretty great film; Once again it has the usual Studio Ghibli & Hayao Miyazaki staples, and JC and I enjoyed how they were utilised here. The dub was the 2006 version by Disney featuring Michael Keaton as the titular character (which is great for me since I enjoyed his performance as Chick Hicks in Cars and Kay Croc in The Founder). The animation is great, the tone is very balance with both seriousness and goofy humor (especially with the air pirates and the banter between Porco and Fio), the characters are great, and the voice acting in the dub is really good too. I do have some minor gripes with the film though. One, the rather ambiguous ending (which seems to be common in Ghibli films); The film (via Fio) doesn't explicitly explain the fate of Porco during the epilogue narration (the closest thing to that is mentioning the result of Gina's bet being a secret and a post-credits sequence showing Porco's plane flying in the clouds) . Two, the fact that Fio, who is 17 years old, apparently has a crush on Porco, who is somewhere in his 30s, and this kinda rubbed me the wrong way (there are a couple of jokes early on in the film regarding this, and they were actually pretty funny, but then it started to become a little, ehhhh.), which I'm gonna chalk it up to some values dissonance. But none of those two gripes diminish anything from the film itself, it is still a great film and if you haven't seen it I recommend you should. Actually that could probably be said for all the Studio Ghibli filmography. The next Studio Ghibli film on JC and I's watch list is Whisper of the Heart, and I'm looking forward to watching it when we feel like doing so.

It took me a while to warm up to anime as well. I'm still not really sure much modern anime productions grip me, but I've gotten into a considerable amount of retro/older anime over the years. Sailor Moon is a big one, that one quite appealed to my sensibilities. I like the character interactions, I like the (over)-use of stock footage, I like how it's kind of a "super sentai"-esque action show, it really has it all. It's also mostly meant for kids I guess, but it was still very enjoyable.
The Studio Ghibli films are phenomenal, I have yet to see all of them but I've seen a good chunk of them with my wife. I feel like if I had to rank them, the ranking would change every time I thought about it. Spirited Away obviously places very highly, but beyond that I'm not sure... I might have to give it some thought and jot it down one day. Or finish watching the rest of them. I still haven't seen Mononoke! Can you believe it? I have executive dysfunction pretty bad, okay??? It's hard to just... do stuff. I gotta be in the right mood and, gah, it doesn't just happen out of nowhere. ![]()

![]() Saw Whisper of the Heart yesterday and I really enjoyed it. It was a lot more emotional than Porco Rosso, but it also had it's share of humorous moments. I also really enjoyed it's lesson regarding pushing oneself to do better, the scene where Shizuku sang Country Roads while Seiji, his grandfather and his associates were playing music, and especially the whole "hidden gems and polishing them" scene. Good film, don't have anything else to say about it.

![]() Saw Princess Mononoke, thought it was good. The themes of hate and letting go of one's hate (so that it doesn't cloud yourself) hit hard, the stakes get really high and dire, and it still manages to have some humorous moments sprinkled about (mostly in scenes taking place in Irontown) also uh, the warthogs, i couldn't take em seriously when they first showed up cause i kept thinking about Pumbaa, the Bad Piggies, the boars from Asterix and other silly pig things when they were on screen (it quickly went away though) If I were to recommend anyone this film, I'd advise them to be aware of the, almost comically amount of blood and disturbing imagery (I myself was vaguely aware of such but JC and I were still caught off guard (read: not scared just surprised) by the scene where Ashitaka accidentally kills two guards with his bow and arrow by amputating and beheading them respectively) By the way after that scene JC and I were pretty much aware of the tone the movie was gonna go (somehow the scene with Nago in the beginning didn't surprised us a lot), so some of the deaths actually started to become a little bit funny, at least to me. @Vitiman if you and your wife eventually end up watching the movie, I'd hope both of ya can stomach that sort of stuff. I think I had more notes about the film, like something about how some of a humor in the scenes in Irontown are about how most of the women were originally doing.. a line of work I didn't expect to hear in a Ghibi film before Lady Eboshi took them in (they seem to be really cheerful to discuss it though ![]() anyway good movie can't wait to watch Spirited Away soon |
