Exchange Students

Last week some exchange students from Japan came to my school. While it was only a 1-week experience, they enjoyed their stay and liked the school, despite it being incredibly different from their schools in Japan. A few of them wanted to stay in America a bit longer, even.

I didn't get to talk much with any of the exchange students (and I don't remember their names), aside from one who was following one of my friends through her classes for the week (she ended sitting at the same table as I did in Biology). She was very nice, giving me and the other people at my table a few treats from Japan on a few occasions. I consider her to be a friend even though we didn't know eachother for very long.

While the exchange students didn't have to do any of the actual school work, my friend's exchange student was actually fine with it (and actually got a record time in my friend's PE class!), and another exchange student gave his input on an English assignment a different friend had.
In English class, we had just finished reading Unbroken the week before, and were watching the movie adaption that week to make a presentation of the differences between the book and movie (for those of you that don't know; Unbroken is a book about a WWII POW and is a true story about a person named Louie Zamperini). Because of my other friend partnering with the exchange student, he included how Japan viewed World War II in his presentation: A big mistake on their part, and they have no hard feelings towards America.

A few of the exchange students knew English, though not very much. One of them I was only able to say "Hello" to, and that's all they were able to understand. A few of the ones I got to meet but not know very well I could at least have a short conversation with.

All and all it was a great experience and I would enjoy having some more exchange students at my school. I've heard that my school wants to send some of our students to China, though they're still looking for a sister school. I don't think I would go myself, but my step-brother wants to go.

This is a little bit different, but when I was in grad school, about half of my classmates were from overseas. These students spent a year in America to earn a master's degree. It was interesting to spend so much time interacting with people from a wide variety of countries and cultures. I had one team project where each team member was born in a different country, which was neat. Most of these students were very strong quantitatively, although some of them had difficulty with English.

Our dean discussed participating in an exchange program in Japan, but not enough students were interested, so it didn't happen.

My family has never housed an exchange students, but relatives of mine have housed multiple. One was from France and he was really nice. I went to Disney World with him. The other was Dominican and was here for two years. She.... was not so nice.

She just wasn't a nice person. She told my uncle, with whom she was staying, that he was her least favorite out of the family and that his food tastes bad. She would roll her eyes whenever people would talk and would laugh at really inappropriate times, which was odd. She also never did her homework or studied, so she was kind of wasting the opportunity. There are other things too, but basically she just was not a nice person and she made everyone quite uncomfortable.

While it wasn't really an exchange program, my brother spent a whole year overseas in Japan studying. From what he's told me, it was a very interesting and enriching experience, and he actually plans to get a job there now. He also told me that, generally, the people who were most excited about going to Japan ended up being the ones most disappointed about actually being there. It is a place where you really need to temper your expectations of what it'll be like if you're a foreigner. He couldn't get basic everyday jobs like at a gas station, or a movie theatre, simply because he wasn't Japanese. He's aiming for a teaching job, which is apparently much easier for someone like him to get and actually a fairly respectable position, compared to here in America, anyway.

He also found a girlfriend while over there, and she's actually come across the Pacific to visit our family a couple times, and it was a real treat getting to know about Japanese culture straight from someone who's lived there their whole life.

Falcon Punch is the result of the Sun heating fists. It drives the Blue Falcon. Heating causes destruction of water into the pain, where it then hurts, creating rain. Rain creates flowing water in tears, which can then be converted into other forms through more pain.

Okay. Real talk here.

I actually have a crush on a very smart student from another school who apparently was the young mayor in the city where my school was. September 2017, she went to United States as an exchange student. WELL, I do not know what's happening there: maybe she had a lot of fun with her new American friends. I was reading a Facebook post from the mayor of that specific city and it appears that my crush was having fun as an exchange student.

(Also tbh, we didn't get any exchange students in our school. I don't know why, but since I study in a Catholic school, I don't know if that's going to happen.)

Private schools can have exchange students. My cousins went to private high schools and they had quite a few. Not sure if this varies from place to place, though.

Happened at mine. We had some exchange students from Norway and Austria. The Norwegian one was in my class and didn't know a speck of French in the beginning. By the end of the school year, he performed better in the language than some of my other classmates. I kind of miss that guy, he was really nice.
