I have not played it either, though I have enjoyed Sonic Mania, from what I have so far played.

Just like you too, I haven't played Sonic Forces yet either. But one thing's for sure. It doesn't look as good as Sonic Mania.

It's Generations 2 with less variety and a worse "Classic" Sonic experience, but it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

Played the whole thing. It’s... alright. I don’t really feel it’s a huge blemish on the series in the way 06 was or anything, but it’s not terribly impressive, either.
Classic and Modern Sonic both control a bit strangely. Modern’s acceleration kinda feels like it’s tiered, as if you jump straight up from 0.3 to 1. Classic is a bit harder to pin down. He’s more accurate than Generations in some ways but less accurate in others. Level design is indeed pretty linear, but I must admit that Classic’s level design is a bit more competent than I expected. Though, the thing that irks me most is the plot. Mostly, how it relates to Sonic Mania. The Phantom Ruby is given a ton of different qualities, some of which don’t feel like they mesh with Mana’s plot and some that don’t even mesh with Forces’ own plot. It says a lot that fans can’t seem to reach a consensus on how much of Mania even happened.

Honestly, I think they kind of wasted the...entire actual concept on making this a mainline Sonic game.
I know that having a Sonic anniversary title where you don't even play as Sonic would be blasphemy, and call me crazy for this, if you want, but I think that both the OC aspect and the game's overall tone, story and theming would have been better suited to some kind of multiplayer-focused spinoff title. No seriously, hear me out here. Imagine a game that essentially consists of a greatly-expanded version of Sonic Adventure 2's battle mode, but with two factions, online multiplayer, and character creation. And instead of merely customizing your character's appearance, you could tweak every single "stat," with of course some kinds of restricting and balancing mechanics, to your liking. Max speed, acceleration, turn speed, vertical jump strength, horizontal jump speed, how far you get knocked back when damaged, how quickly you get back up, and all of those things. Then you could apply one or more abilities (spindash, flight, climbing, chaos powers, homing attack, shockwave ground pound, etc,) and finally customize your character's physical appearance and clothing to your liking before taking part in various 1-on-1 or team-based modes in order to earn rings and unlock even more clothing, perks, and abilities. As for modes, the race and emerald hunt modes from SA2B could both work pretty much as-is, as long as the levels were designed to accommodate for the strengths and weaknesses of various different types of characters. To keep character archetypes from getting TOO wild and unpredictable, though, maybe you would be limited to only one traversal-related ability. So you couldn't fly AND climb, or lightspeed dash AND glide. When it comes to more team-oriented modes, I'm not too sure about what they'd add, but the good old competitive multiplayer staple of Capture the Flag actually seems like something that would be perfectly suited for a multiplayer Sonic game. Would it be sold for full retail price? Probably not, but then again, Forces wasn't sold for full price itself. Would it make for a good anniversary title? ...I doubt it, but then again, it'd be a heck of a way to celebrate the one division of their fandom that actually still seems to like and play most of their games. And it would probably be more entertaining for a longer period of time than most of the anniversary titles that they've released so far, so...heck, why not? I'd be more willing to buy that than Straight Line the Corridor 3 & Spectacle.

I played through about 6 stages and a boss before getting sick of it. I ended up refunding it.
Super hot take: It reaches peak mediocrity. Like where its not good enough to enjoy but not bad enough to be memorable. It could be considered an art how dull they made this game. Only good part is getting to make an OC.

I'd say it's probably one of the most "okay" video games I've played in some time. I liked the OC, but I feel like he/she couldn't realize his/her potential due to the brevity of most stages.

Sonic Forces is an alright experience. But it's thoroughly mediocre, as everyone's stated. Though it has good qualities to it, Forces utterly wastes them on basic implementations and shoddy inconsistencies.
For fans (and those willing to suspend their disbelief), it's an enjoyable-enough train ride. But it certainly doesn't match up to basically every other grade-A title released this year.

It's disappointing but hardly a surprise. I'll probably grab it if it's ever $5 on Steam or part of a Humble Bundle, but it's not worth more than that in my eyes.

This entirely, I think I had more enjoyment from Sonic 06 just from how much there was to actually discover. Sonic Forces is several pieces of different concepts thrown into one game trying please everyone. None of them are thought out, they're very shallow, and there's almost nothing to discover or learn about them. If the game was entirely one thing, it would have been great. But it feels like all these mechanics were trying to beat each other out the door and they all got caught in the threshold. If it was entirely Sonic, then the game could be based around simple Sonic mechanics, if the game was about the custom characters, then there could've been so much to do with them. But the game tries to cover all bases at once, so each thing doesn't get the attention you wish it could. The custom characters only have a single boss, and only a few stages where you get to play as them alone. After you finish customizing and selecting your powers you go to the map where it hits you. After all the fun selection they give you with the avatars, there's almost nothing to actually do with them. I think the thing that offends me the most is Classic Sonic, who was only put in to appease fans of Generations. It's very clear that the designers had no idea what to actually do with him and that he's just pure advertisement for the game.
