A few days ago, I fired up GameMaker 8.1, and it gave me a message saying that my license can't be validated. Because of this, it's running as the lite version, instead of the standard (AKA pro) version. Normally, this would happen if I'm not connected to the Internet for a while. However, my Internet connection has never been knocked out lately this time. I opened it up about every day since then, and it continues to give me that message.

Is there any way to fix this? The message said that I could manually download the license verification file from the YoYoGames website, but I'm not really sure about that. I looked through the help section of said website, and I couldn't find anything related to the problem I'm currently having. Did YoYoGames stop supporting GameMaker 8.1 for good? If that's the case I guess I could either port any games to Game Maker 8.0 (though, I wouldn't be able to use the pro features, but the watermark shouldn't be there) or GameMaker: Studio 1 (I can still use that program's standard version, but it lacks a few features like MIDI support).

YYG has pretty much stopped supporting "legacy" versions of GM. They really want to push people onto their newest version - which offers some new features and a really annoying and expensive subscription model.

You can try opening a helpdesk ticket with YYG, though I suspect they won't verify GM 8.1 licenses anymore.

(Of course, a lot of people would try another kind of "workaround" for this problem.)

Bumping this to let people know that I booted up GameMaker 8.1 today and it's in the Standard version instead of the Lite version. Between the date of the original post (mid-2022) and today, I think I once had GameMaker 8.1 register my license and become the Standard version, but aside from that it reverts back to the Lite version. I'm not sure why this happens. Is it because YYG has been messing around with whatever server GameMaker 8.1 is connected to? Did YYG realize they messed up people's GameMaker 8.1 licenses and are now trying to fix the problem? Or maybe they don't notice this whole kerfuffle and at some point later on they'll do something that'll mess up the licenses again? Who knows... at least I opened up a few of my old, abandoned games and exported them into EXEs, so I can play them with the Standard features left intact, even if I lose my Standard version again.

@VinnyVideo Good thing GameMaker is free now! I still can't believe YYG made that decision after sticking to a subscription for so long, not that I'm complaining! Smile I'm not sure if the newest version will work in my computer, though...
