I want to add a retro world to my games, but I need a reason for it to be retro.

I want to add a world based on games for 8-bit consoles, but I want the world to have a reason as to why it looks the way it does, something that I can't think of. If anyone could give me ideas, that would be great.

I've always loved the PICO-8 in Celeste. Making it an in-universe secret was really neat, with a little clever thinking I'm sure you could find a way to tie in a similar concept to story progression.
