I asked Gatete about A Plumber's Journey not too long ago, he told me he cancelled it because it was becoming too close to Super Mario Maker. As far as I know, he scrapped everything so if there was a demo on there, he removed it for a reason as such. You might be able to message him about it for more info, though.
