I had this weird thought yesterday (for some reason): where Mario is executed and then all of Mario's fans (NOTE: not the fans on the Mario Fan Games Galaxy) committed suicide, and then the government heard about this and then destroyed every video game console ever made.
People who played video games 24 hours a day then became doctors, scholars, teachers, police officers, etc.

NOTE: It might be worth adding that i was in a bad mood while thinking about this, so it might explain the part where Mario is executed and the other dark elements.

It's normal to have intrusive thoughts, especially if you have anxiety disorders of any kind. That said, this does seem like an oddly specific scenario to imagine, not that it makes it any less believable.
