The last time MFGG did one of these was back in 2016. That's too long ago, I say! (Note: this is modified from the sign up thread of the previous season, originally written by Kirby's Adventure. Some important details have been modified, so please give it a read.)

1) What's this?

Mafia is a parlor game where the citizens of the town try to unmask the mafiosos that walk among them. The townspeople vote to execute a member during the day, and the mafia votes by PM to decide that night's murder victim.

This is a game of teamwork, as well as distrust. Nobody can be sure of anybody else's role, and it's not very smart to reveal your own, but both sides must work together to eliminate the opposing team.

2) Rules

2a) Day

The game begins on a day phase. Each day phase lasts 48 hours.

During the day, all members discuss in the main game topic. The citizens have the goal of finding a member of the mafia, and the mafia must try to blend in and appear to be pro-town, in order to avoid getting executed.

Everyone must vote on a player to be executed (killed by the town). This is done by making a post with the following format: "I vote [username]." You are allowed to vote "no one", but you are REQUIRED to post "I vote no one." If you do not post by the end of the day phase, your vote is not counted at all. All votes must be equal or greater to 50% of the votes for a player to be executed. Any other outcome results in no execution.

In case of two players both getting 50% of the votes, the player who reached 50% first will be eliminated. In case of a 50/50 between a player and "no one", the player will be eliminated.

2b) Night

Each night phase lasts 24 hours. (or should it be 48?)

During the night phase, the citizens should be asleep, so posting in this topic is not allowed.

Each mafia member will send me a PM deciding who they vote, in the "I vote [username]" format. If 50% of the voting mafia (or more) send me the same username, they will be murdered, unless the murder had been stopped by a role that can save people.

Roles that have night actions will also PM me, stating their intent.

At the end of the night phase, before the next day phase, I will announce any deaths that occurred during the night, send PMs to players who performed their actions and inform them of the results.

2c) Win Conditions

The townsfolk win by eliminating the mafia.

The mafia wins by outnumbering the townsfolk.

Once either of these things happen, the game is over, and the winning team is declared the victor.

There may or may not be other players that have their own unique win condition.

2d) Roles

Roles are assigned at random.

Special roles that have powers outside the rules listed above will be assigned and explained in detail in the main game topic. You could be a cop, doctor, or some other special role.

Some roles' existence might not be made publicly known.

At the beginning of the game, I will send out PMs describing your role, abilities, and any items you might start with.

3) Other Important Things

You must be willing to commit until the end, and play seriously, even if you end up with a regular townie role. If you make no posts or PMs to me regarding the game within 6 real-time days (2 day-night cycles) I will have to kick you out.

The minimum amount of players I'm hoping for is 9. However, I'm hoping we can get more than that. There is no hard maximum number of players. If there are only a few players, I will probably make some changes to accommodate a small pool of players.

If you need clarification on anything, feel free to PM me.

Everyone is allowed to lie about their role and frame other players, etc. However, keep in mind that the mafia know each-other's identities, and it's impossible to lie to me.

While PMs for private conversation are allowed, it is strongly encouraged to post in the public topic when relevant. This way, people who aren't playing can still spectate the game.

Don't be discouraged if this is your first time playing. This is my first time doing anything mafia-related online, so you aren't alone!

If you want to play say so in this thread. Please make it unambiguously clear.

Signups are open until February 15. I will then determine the roles, and send out PMs. The game should start within a few days.
Seems this update fixed a couple of issues with plugins, which means I was able to re-enable a plugin that makes username colors consistent.
Forum updates can break things, of course, so speak up if anything's not working as expected.

The MFGG forums are now running PHP 8.2

The MFGG forums are finally running PHP 8.2! Getting the forums from PHP 5.6 to 8.2 was a tedious undertaking, but it was worth it. Running the latest version of PHP gives us improved performance and ensures that it'll be feasible to continue running the forums for a long time to come.

As with the PHP upgrades to the mainsite and Wiki, you might notice occasional bugs. If you notice any PHP warnings at the top of forum pages or any crashes, don't panic - such oddities are to be expected after a PHP upgrade. If anything isn't working properly, just reply to this topic and tell me what page is causing problems, and I'll get it fixed.

I'm aware that badges next to posts still look a little funny - that's on my to-do list. A couple of plugins that we used to use are now disabled, but I hope to bring them back in the future.

PHP 8.2 is more likely to throw errors than PHP 5.6. This might sound like a bad thing, but it's actually a very good thing - when you get a PHP warning, something wasn't coded as well as it could've and might not be working at all. For example, this update helped us realize that the reports notification wasn't working properly, so some reports stayed unread for a while.

Thanks for being patient as we make MFGG a slightly more awesome place every day!

MFGG's mainsite now has a fully responsive design! This should result in a great user experience whether you're on a desktop, a laptop, a tablet, or a mobile phone. Groovy.

The MFGG forums share a server with a bunch of other sites. Of those, the MFGG mainsite is probably the one you're most familiar with. The MFGG mainsite generates a lot more traffic than the others. Because the MFGG server doesn't have unlimited processing power and RAM, if one site puts a serious strain on the server, other sites might start having problems as well.

So when you start getting slowness and timeouts on the MFGG mainsite, the forums tend to get slow as well. Sean, a good friend and awesome person I've known for a long time, was super-duper helpful in helping find a solution to the mainsite performance issues. And now that the mainsite is performing well, the forums will have enough resources to operate happily.

Note that there are a few forum-specific issues I'm looking into. I'm currently looking into the feasibility of upgrading the forums to PHP 8.2, just as we did with the mainsite. For the next few days, you might notice occasional hiccups like random PHP error messages at the top of the forums index, or certain plugins (most notably, badges) not working.
It is that time of the year, we are doing another Isometric Collab.

As many people knows, Mario's turning 40 years on this year. And what about making a collab celebrating all the games released until this date.

Rules for this collab are simple (Taken from the last collab thread cause I am a lazy f***)

Claim up to five (not three) tiles at a time by replying with each numbered tile you want. Claiming is first come, first served, so make sure that these tiles are not already claimed in the list on this post or in below replies.

Using these tiles you may create isometric scenes featuring stuff from any official Mario games

If there are no updates on your progress with your tiles within one week from when you requested them, other members may claim your tiles.

When complete, upload your own tiles separately and I will update the image after placing you tile(s) into their proper location.

Please do not upload as transparent PNGs or GIFs. Please upload your tiles separately and with the background color of the collab. JPEGs are not allowed.

There are no style or pallete restrictions. However, your entry must be pixel art and may not be edited from existing graphics unless HEAVILY modified to the degree that the source material is unrecognizable.

Please try not to obscure other tiles without communicating with the person who has claimed that tile.

After all the tiles are completed and placed, we will work together to polish this and ensure all tiles flow together in a sensible way.
Contributors will receive a shiny Iso-collab Contributer badge!

MFGG turns 23 years old on July 9! I've always thought it would be fun to do a trivia game to test your knowledge of all things MFGG - so why not do it right now!

This trivia game includes 23 questions, one for each year of MFGG's existence. Whoever gets the best score wins a cool badge for their forum profile, but even if you don't win, everyone who participates is automatically awesome!

I'm going to check all submissions manually - this way, you'll still get credit if you make a small typo or if you abbreviate an acronym or something. I reserve the right to award partial credit if an answer is "not quite right" - say, you get the series correct but not the right game. There's no penalty for guessing, so it's better to write an incorrect answer than to leave a question blank.

The Questions
Here's the full list of questions, in no particular order:

1. This is the site that Thunder Dragon created before he launched MFGG. (Hint: It's Bowser Technologies.)
2. This is the only fangame where you can battle a robot cowboy named Whipster.
3. In this fangame, you can pay a visit to the Home Hardware Kingdom.
4. This former MFGG admin is often associated with the number 3298.
5. This longtime MFGGer is traditionally represented by a Magikoopa, but his namesake is a Kremling.
6. A mysterious girl named Bella claims to be the rightful heir to the throne of the Mushroom Kingdom in this fangame.
7. This old fangame gives you a chance to rescue a former MFGG administrator's pet cat.
8. This spooky fangame was discussed on TV in 2005.
9. In 2016, the MFGG forums turned into this old Nickelodeon TV show.
10. In this fangame, you skip the epic showdown against the King of the Koopas when the game spontaneously says Mario beat Bowser.
11. He was the only MFGG administrator to hail from India.
12. The official Twitter account of this European nation once tagged MFGG in a tweet.
13. This early fangame's graphics use scans of hand-drawn pencil graphics.
14. This classic fangame includes multiple references to the band Nirvana.
15. You might meet American broadcast journalist Dan Rather in this zany game.
16. This game won an MFGG Super Competition. Now you can buy it on Steam.
17. This fangame is named after a hormone associated with proper sleep cycles in humans.
18. A rarely-accessible secret area in this fangame can lead you to a magical vuvuzela.
19. This fangame has the most comments of all games on the MFGG mainsite.
20. This yummy minigame collection includes games like Blooper's Big Day and Dangerous Dash.
21. Weighing in at around 300 megabytes, this submission boasts the largest download size on the MFGG mainsite.
22. The 75,000-Coin Coin, an especially valuable asset, is a recurring theme in this fangame series.
23. The bestiary for this fangame mentions pie-shaped people that have painful pointy prickles protruding from their pores.

So, if you've been to the main site you might have noticed that the last news post is from 2021. Whuh? What? You might have also heard about something along the lines of the main site getting compromised.

TL;DR: Someone compromised a staff account, deleted all the news posts, and promoted their own stuff. No need to worry though because we do have backups and will restore things fully soon.

That being said, if I was just a regular member of the community, and something like this had happened but the details were swept under the rug with just that, I'd be annoyed. So to have full transparency, this post will have a full explanation of the events that had transpired.

But before that, I will emphasize a few things:

Nothing is lost permanently here. They deleted the news, but we temporarily restored all the ones from up to 2021 for now, and will bring back the rest shortly (from an off-site backup hopefully).

Except for a certain specific user I'll get to, your account is safe and not accessed from outside.

Nothing else is touched. The games and whatnot are intact and safe.

There's no real big security risk going on. There's no backdoor as far as we know, it's just someone guessing a staff account's password.

This is not connected to any other prior incident.

They didn't have access to the full backend of the site. Only a specific portion, which they seemingly only used to snoop on one member, then spam on the news section.

How are we so sure about all this though? Well, it's because we can see everything. Every single move of these people has been logged, including the pages they have visited. So we know exactly what they did, in what order.

So here's what happened, based on what I heard from the staff members who were awake at the time, and my own investigation of the logs:

They first visited a user's profile. When you google their name, MFGG is one of the first results to pop up, so that's likely how they discovered the site. This user had never done anything on the site, at least since the late 2000s.

They tried to log in to it, but failed.

So, they tried to log into various staff accounts instead. They got the password wrong many times in the process.

But eventually one of them worked. Our guess is that the password was either super easy to guess, or it was included in a prior database leak from a different website. This is why you don't use the same password across multiple websites.

Using the staff account they immediately took control of the mystery user's account as well. From what I can tell, they proceeded to do nothing with it, and the account itself did not contain much information. We ended up locking this account.

They also banned me to prevent me from stopping them. I was asleep at the time, as this whole thing happened around at 6 AM for me, so I was not there to see my first MFGG ban, sadly.

They deleted pretty much all the main site news posts as well. Come on man...

They then started posting a bunch of news post of their own, flaunting their victory, and promoting their Twitter accounts. Those accounts are pretty barren though, and mostly have posts related to... Yep, you guessed it, Roblox.

Fun With Despair noticed all this and tried banning them. Before he could though, they just changed the password of his account and started using it to spam instead.

We quickly tried to sort things out, reverted back a quick backup we had from 2021 for emergencies, cleared session records to log them out of the staff accounts, reset the passwords of ALL staff accounts, and deleted the accounts they had made.

Turns out this was not enough and they were still somehow logged into Despair's account, so we additionally IP banned them as well, and temporarily banned Despair's account also just to be safe.

Now, some of you might realize this all sounds eerily similar to two other incidents that had transpired before.

Some MFGG and Mario Flashback OGs will remember the Roblox raids. To sum it up, there used to be a group of people who would use exploits to put messages in popular Roblox games (I'm talking about games played by millions) that tell them to raid a server to receive free Robux (Roblox currency). MFGG was a target of these attacks. Why? No idea, none of us got anything to do with Roblox. But I'm almost certain that those people who organized the raids are not the same people who nuked the news posts here. It's just that Roblox attracts a lot of toxic kids. We also don't know the identity of those raiders, don't pay attention to anyone else who says otherwise.

The other incident in question is the previous main site takeover. There was another incident of another staff account getting compromised in the exact same way, and someone spamming stuff in the news, with far less impact. We had taken precautions after the said incident, and even revamped the entire backend to improve the site's security as a whole, but it clearly wasn't enough and some staff members still kept using unsecure passwords.

We have also been dealing with the issue of an individual from an affiliated community joining our Discord server to spam slurs and random screenshots. That's also unrelated.

As the MFGG staff we made one big crucial mistake here. We did not make absolutely sure that all staff accounts, including the inactive ones, used secure passwords. We kinda just trusted each other, but that was clearly not enough. Thankfully, nothing serious happened outside the temporary loss of news posts, but things could be so SO much worse. Still, we are going to take full responsibility for this breach, and make ABSOLUTELY SURE nobody's able to brute force into staff accounts in the future. We are terribly sorry for all that happened.

There are a few lessons to learn here:

Do not reuse the same password in multiple places. Use a password manager if necessary.

If you have old, unused accounts on sites where the account getting compromised would be a problem, please make sure that they have strong passwords.

Make frequent backups.

Don't let your kids play Roblox.

And lastly, I want to just say that please remember that all the staff members here are just volunteers who like the Mario franchise and the underground fangaming culture MFGG represents. We don't make money from running this site, and it's not fun to constantly deal with raids and stuff like this. Please try to be understanding.

Yes, you read that right. The MFGG mainsite isn't just limited to .ZIP downloads anymore - now you can upload HTML5 games and play them in your browser!

Traditionally, most MFGG games require some version of Microsoft Windows to run, but HTML5 games will run on almost any reasonably modern device. And since an increasing number of people do most of their browsing on mobile devices, and since GameMaker now lets you export HTML5 games for free, we thought this would be a very helpful feature to add.

This is a new feature, and it's very much in its early stages. I want to make sure that this new functionality won't cause any unforeseen stability or security concerns. This means submitting an HTML5 game is a special privilege, not an inalienable right. For now, I'd like to stick to reasonably small games (your 15-MB minigame is fine; your 500-MB epic with lots of .WAV files is not).

We reserve the right to end this feature if it doesn't work properly. But I'm optimistic this feature will work well and make MFGG a more enjoyable place for both developers and fangame players.

If you want to upload an HTML5 game to the mainsite, shoot me a message and I'll show you what you need. I'll also be able to help you if you want to add an HTML5 version to an existing submission, or if you've previously had an HTML5 game declined because it won't run when downloaded.
