Making a Fan-Made Paper Mario game. Question....

So, I'm making a fan-made Paper Mario game. It's called Paper Mario: The Star Princess! Storyline-wise this happens between the ending of Paper Mario 64 and the beginning of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Old Door. It's the Paper Mario that I wish I could've played. So far I'm not very far into the game, I only got the first level (Which isn't much of a level) done. I'm currently working on the forest that leads to Toad Town, and Toad Town itself.

Here's a brief summary about the game:

This is the Spiritual successor to Paper Mario 64. After Princess Peach celebrated her birthday at her castle, she and the Star Spirit ElderStar started making their way back to Star Haven. However enemies started to appear on the road to Star Haven, but with the help of ElderStar, Princess Peach is able to defeat them all. But then they meet up with the mysterious Sorcerous Jaydes, who stole the Star Rod from Star Haven, they immediately go into battle.
Unfortunately, Jaydes wins the battle. Elderstar flees from Jaydes, and Jaydes kidnaps Princess Peach. Now it’s up to Mario and the Star Spirits to reclaim the Star Rod and defeat the evil Jaydes. This time, you get to play as 2 separate parties, Mario and Princess Peach. With Mario, you get the Star Spirits as partners. Each Star Spirit has unique movesets and take on a vital role in helping Mario.
You also get to play as Princess Peach. Princess Peach is no longer the damsel in distress, she’s decided to take matters into her own hands. Princess Peach becomes friends with certain enemies in an attempt to figure out Jaydes weakness and exploit it. Each partner of Princess Peach’s has their own unique moveset, and Peach works diligently to help Mario out while trying to stop her captor Jaydes from making more bad wishes with the Star Rod.
Will Mario, the Star Spirits, Peach, and her partners, will they succeed? One can only hope in Paper Mario: The Star Princess.

My question is, would you play a game like this? Be honest. I am a beginning video game developer so the final product might not be "industry standard" but I am trying my absolute hardest for it to be enjoyable. But would you play my game? Why or why not?

Hi there!

Today is MFGG's 25th Anniversary and I actually made a note of it so I wouldn't miss a milestone this time!

For those who don't know me; I am Neo Hyper Yoshi, one of the oldbies from the ' Golden Age ' when MFGG was in it's infancy in 2001 when it was small enough that it felt more like a family than a large website. Yeah, I thought I was been cool back then with my username ( basically because I look Yoshi, thought Hyper Sonic was cool and the ezboards site botched registering my username ' Hyper Yoshi ' so I had to add the ' Neo ' to it and the rest was history!

I can tell stories about those early years; Anti-SFGHQ ( That was me who made that as a forum, then I was able to get online for a few days afterwards because this was Ireland in 2001. Made mainly cos SFGHQ's forums had a lot of dickish people in it, kinda expected as most of us were teenagers back then! ) The Great ' Kyle ' Flamewar that ended with the deletion of the MFGG for the first time.

That said, MFGG kept me sane and going during a rough period when I was 15 - 16 and I am greatful. Oh, I'm 40 now so yes I'm a dinosaur and the Saving Private Ryan meme is relevant to me!

So I just though I'd post this and wish MFGG a Happy Anniversary, hope it's a good one and you keep going strong!

And if anyone wants to ask me anything, please go ahead and I'll see what I can remember.

As some of yall have heard, I got hacked and the hacker almost got to every point of my digital infrastructure. I was a former sysadmin for MFGG and I still have credentials so that was revoked just to be extra safe.

This was originally a script for my YouTube channel but I decided to put it here instead because it's too focused on the event:
Since it is a MASSIVE wall of text, I just pasted my Google Docs of the incident to here.

I really appreciate your time listening to my experiences. I do want to give some pointers on how to keep yourself safe and prepare yourself in event of being hacked:

In this day of age, you cannot trust even your closest friends on social media. Because you never know if they got hacked. There are some ways to determine if it’s them like a secret phrase you disclose outside the chat or ask them a question only they know about you. If that doesn’t work or your friends don't know much about you. The number 1 rule of thumb is to never touch ANY files or any links you don’t recognize. If you have to, prepare your Discord account in a sandboxed environment like a virtual machine, make sure you have your backups like your passkeys ready, and do it from there.

Have a habit to log out frequently. Especially on systems that are more vulnerable like Windows. The less the active session you have, the less likely the hacker is able to hijack your accounts

Do not use any web browser passwords. It is best to have an offline password manager only on your phone and/or write it down in a notebook if you can keep it secure. Even though it is logged in, the password database and encryption key are typically laid around in your system that can be easily decrypted and it's not too much saving your password as a txt file.

It is best to have a YouTube channel tied to your Google account so that you can get the ball rolling by contacting YouTube Support on Twitter/X. Be sure to remember your YouTube account’s channel ID, name, and the URL to your latest videos. The more details you have, the more leverage you have to prove ownership.

If you have any old device sitting there collecting dust, register your Google account in it and keep it offline, the more old devices you have the better. Especially when your Google account got hacked, keeping it offline will prevent your Google account being synced and updated to the settings the hacker placed. Remember the security code from your Google account settings and remember the date/time. This will be your golden ticket to regain access to your hacked Google account when you’re communicating with YouTube support.

Always have multiple accounts as backups, never put all login in one basket (email). If your email account gets hacked, you’ll be in a worse position. And because of how Google handles my data, I cannot trust them to secure my most sensitive accounts anymore. I moved to Proton mail for that reason. I haven’t contacted Proton yet and hopefully I don’t have to end up in that point but from what I’ve heard they’re more proactive on protecting their consumers, especially paid customers.

If you have custom voicemail greetings on your phone, delete that and set that to default voicemail greetings. The reason why is that the hacker can utilize that to train AI and use it to impersonate you. In addition, if you receive unknown number calls, ignore them. If you have to answer, keep the silence and don’t even greet "hello".

Anyways, it was partially my fault not knowing the actual threat and letting my guard down for a moment. Please be careful out there, especially on Discord when it is a primary breeding grounds for hackers. Feel free to leave a comment below for any tips, your story/experience being hacked. I will try to read them and learn from yall as well.

I don't know if anyone here was following Jazz outside of this website, or perhaps the user base here might not be familiar with him... in which case, first, Jazz was a very old contributor to MFGG going back to the IPB days (the wiki says he joined in 2005, so an entire drinking aged person ago).

More recently however, Jazz had been struggling with a battle with cancer. I am very sad to say that he lost this battle earlier this evening.

I was debating if I should be the one sharing this information, but a lot of Jazz's closer friends and folks who used to be on MFGG don't really frequent the site anymore (admittedly, neither do I) and it just seemed appropriate that someone do. He was a big part of MFGG's growing popularity and increasing community.

He was still submitting custom sprites to here as recent as two years ago, and he kept this up for a very very long time.

As I've said in numerous other places and circles, Jazz had a very strong impact on my own art. Even outside of that, he was very nice and kindhearted person and he was always very fun to talk to about games and the like. I wished I interacted with him more than I did, but I can safely say he enriched my life nonetheless. My thoughts go out to his family and close friends in this difficult time.

Hi everyone!
I’m new here, so I wanted to introduce myself.
I’m a GameMaker Studio 2 developer currently working on a pixel‑art action/survival game called Battlepaper.
It’s a post‑apocalyptic game with melee combat, missions, rescuing allies and taking back territory. I recently added a new weapon (the Axe), and now I’m focusing on quests and preparing an English version of the game.
I joined MFGG because I really like retro‑style games and pixel art, and I’ve seen that this community has a lot of talented creators.
If anyone ever wants to give feedback or has suggestions on how I could improve things, I’m always open to it — I really want to make this project solid.
Nice to meet you all!

My friend Jinpen (who posted some artwork on these boards, but is no longer active, also permabanned from the other boards) was a friend of mine who made sprite comics with me. He had his own website and I was a "staff member" although I don't remember actually contributing much to his website, besides an Easter post one time. We would have group AIM chats and he would talk about MFGG. He was a penguin in a military costume. A general, possibly. He liked Cheap Trick, and was very Japanese.

I observed the forums, and decided to join after noticing it was the dominant hot spot, for art, character creation, friendly art exchange, pop culture fascination, especially videogames and Mario. (which was the sprite comic community back in the day). The users were fun and delightful and cool and lots of events to occur.

How and why did you discover MFGG? Were you looking for it, or did it find you?

EDIT: Jinpen was Korean, don't want to gossip about MGGers personal lives, lol.

So last year, in 2025, I was studying people, products, things I can benefit form or interested in, and I was looking for specific messageboards to post photos of them, discussions, ask questions, but they were no more like in the 2000s. For example, I am working on a Marilyn Monroe project. Assuming that there would be some sorts of actual fan community or messageboards for the actress, I could not find anything. But I would like to assume that in the 2000s I would have probably been more likely to find a messageboard of her. Now we have social media, X, Instagram, Reddit for that.

So what are your thoughts on messageboards in 2026? Do you have any ideas to make them last? Make them more active? What are your thoughts on the messageboards of MFGG?

EDIT: Do you still visit any other forums/message boards other than MFGG?
