Mario's slightly Unusual Boss Rush Godot Port

While I've been taking a huge break from my hobbyist work, I ended up learning how to use Godot for game development, and it has been a really interesting journey so far. I was initially using it to port over a project that was originally made in Game Maker Studio, but then I saw SMW ROM Hacker wye's ongoing series where he remakes Super Mario World in Godot.

A bit of inspiration later, I decided to do a complete port-over and overhaul of my last released project to basically improve it in many ways, like the level design, gameplay functionality, sprite work, and A LOT of bug fixes and quality of life improvements.

I've put small and extremely infrequent teasers of it in the MFGG Discord when I had free time to work on it, and now, after approximately 31 days since I started the port over (give or take), I can finally showcase a quick video of it:

There will be several changes in this port regarding the story, level design and level graphical themes (mostly so that it doesn't feel repetitive, is more consistently modernised, among other things).

With the story updates, you'll now start the game choosing to play as either Mario (solo), Luigi (solo), or both together. This choice affects Plus Mode (unlocked after completing the main story with all special coins). For example, if you play as Luigi and unlock Plus Mode, you'll continue as Mario. You'll be able to can switch between the Bros. by pressing Select.

In addition to that, Plus Mode will also have straight up new level design (and some time of day changes), and while some of its bosses will just be harder versions of the main story versions, others will be straight up new bosses. Oh, and beating the main story as both Mario & Luigi will unlock a special character with his own campaign set after the main story, featuring his set of boss battles not in Mario or Luigi's Plus Mode.

A special thanks to for her help in providing her Tanooki Engine/GBC Mario project remnants which were a huge help for this project, alongside , PicoMico and Kembi Mekemo for their help with the 2.0 sprite revamps (some of the enhanced sprites were further modified from their work).

Do not expect frequent updates on this project, and keep any expectations for it in check as I am still taking a general break from hobbyist work. In fact, there is a high chance I might never end up releasing this for whatever reason.

the tileset is termporary until i get some of the more technical graphical things implemented blah blah long story

About this project
The project was initially started by me in the summer of 2015. However, due to academic commitments and the team members' personal responsibilities, progress was slow. By 2022, dissatisfied with the earlier level designs, we made the decision to rebuild the entire episode from scratch. Thanks to our collective effort, we are now proud to present this playable demo—we hope you enjoy it!

The Legend of Darkness offers a wealth of unique features, including diverse characters with distinct personalities, innovative gameplay mechanics, vibrant, dynamic cutscenes, and, most importantly—challenging and fun levels!

STORY
The princess has mysteriously vanished! When the Mario brothers rushed to the castle upon hearing the news, all they witnessed was Bowser's shadowy figure retreating into the distance—and the sudden appearance of a mysterious mask shrouded in dark mist.
The moment the mask manifested, the world twisted in chaos: the sky was swallowed by darkness, thunderbolts split the clouds, and howling winds lashed the land with torrential rain. Mario tried to intervene—only to be blasted away by a surge of dark energy, leaving him unconscious...
Where has Princess Peach disappeared to? What was Bowser's true purpose at the castle? And most chilling of all—what unholy force commands this mask of darkness?
To rescue the princess and uncover the truth, the Mario brothers must now embark on a dark adventure beyond imagination!

About the 40th Anniversary Level Mash-Up
To celebrate Mario's 40th Anniversary, I created commemorative levels based on the framework of the SMBX-38A project - 'The Legend of Darkness' that our team previously built, and integrated them into a standalone game for everyone to play. These stages blend elements from Super Mario Bros. with other classic 2D Mario games, offering a fresh yet nostalgic experience for players.

Here is my newest build. It now has the Princess Peach cutscene. I fixed a surprising amount bugs these last two weeks. As some of you may already know, one involved not checking for NULL termination on one-character animations string, that might have froze my game one out of ten to a hundred times. Quite a few involved the final Bowser fight. Mario was still glitching through walls when riding Yoshi and bouncing off enemies. I'm surprised I didn't catch these sooner.

Good day, MFGG, I hope y'all are doing well. I'm here to dump some crap and then disappear again.

I hope this is in the right forum; there's not much to see, but it might be substantial enough to not be restricted to Dev Discussion. My apologies if this is in the wrong spot.

Anyway, around 2019 I decided I wanted to make a silly non-canon Charisma series game, but I was never able to get very far with what I ended up doing. I figured it was a bit of a shame for it to just rot on my hard drive forever, so I cleaned it up a tiny bit and uploaded it.

There's only two levels. I wanted to at least add a third (chronologically it would have been the first level) before I released this but I couldn't ever really figure out how I wanted it to work; I wanted each stage to be unique from the others.

You have three characters to choose from: Dudim, Miles, and Dustin.

If the first level is too hard or annoying, you can press the 3 key at the menu screen to skip to the last level. Alternatively, there is a secret debug function to restore your health in-level, but good luck finding it. You may also press 2 on the menu screen to go back to the first level, if for some reason you want to do that. Do not press 1 on the menu screen.

Please don't spam the enter key from the title screen or the game will break.

It will definitely not be immediately apparent what you're supposed to do for the first boss; just give it a minute and it'll become very obvious very fast.

For the second level, each character behaves very differently. Dudim has a double jump, and Miles will get one if a certain condition is met. Dustin can't jump on enemies.

Controls are the default Clickteam layout: Shift is button 1, Control is button 2, (both do different things for each character) but you can rebind them. You can set a controller to be used too but you can't rebind the buttons on it.

I've disabled fullscreen because Clickteam Fusion sucks at it by default and I'm not interested in finding an extension that makes it not change your screen resolution, for a feature I imagine no one is likely to use.

Notice before you download: This game is not epilepsy-safe. Also, it's very likely to be picked up by Windows Defender as malware, since for some reason Clickteam games commonly cause that. Also also, it has nothing to do with Rush, which I am actually completely unfamiliar with, despite the title and icon.

Here it be (via Dropbox, if you trust that site; link should hopefully be a straight download). You should really not expect a quality experience. Maybe someone will have fun with it, I dunno. There's maybe a couple of Club Saturn injokes, like the title of the first stage you can play, so I apologize if that's weird for you.

If it wasn't clear by the weird title, this is indeed a sort of boss rush.

Polycity is an Operius/Tempest fangame I threw together in a few days to celebrate its Deluxe version releasing next month on Steam and Nintendo eShop. You're a blue ship shooting red ships, now get the high score. Classic stuff. Left and right arrow to move, spacebar to shoot.
