Currently, only one skin is available on the MyBB forums (excluding a few test skins). Previous iterations of the MFGG forums have given members a bunch of different skins to choose from. We'd like to have more skins available on this forum - and this is where you can help!
How do I make skins?
Probably the best way to do this is to set up a test board where you can upload files and experiment with templates. Make sure that your designs are based on the "New MFGG" template - this way, we can make sure that your skin includes all of the plugins and other customizations we've made. Ideally, you'll only need to modify the themes rather than the templates.
In MyBB's lexicon, "themes" are basically just CSS, while "templates" include a lot of other code as well.
Can I port over skins from the old phpBB or IPB boards?
That would be awesome - but be forewarned that it takes some time and effort. We can't just copy and paste the assets from the old forums and expect them to work in MyBB. Lots of images would need to be renamed or adjusted, and not every feature on the phpBB boards has an equivalent in MyBB. We'd also have to do a lot of CSS work.
Since conversion requires some effort, this is a good time to make improvements to the old designs rather than just trying to duplicate them. There's a lot of ways the old designs could be improved - for example, some images had transparency problems because certain images had to be GIFs instead of PNGs.
If you need any of the files from a previous version of the MFGG forums (whether it's the phpBB or IPB boards), just let me know. I'll be happy to give you anything you need during the skin-making process.
Can I make new skins?
Of course! We'd love to have some new skin designs even if they aren't based on designs we had on a previous version of the forums. It's best if they're Mario-related, but I certainly wouldn't mind if someone made, say, a Zelda or Sonic skin.
How should skins look?
I'd like for there to be some consistency among skins. For example, the "New Reply" and "New Topic" buttons should be in the same relative location regardless of the skin. I don't mind if there's slight variation in the height of banners or in the size of the reply buttons, but don't change the basic layout of the boards unless you have a very good reason to do so.
Please feel free to discuss skin concepts and design. Obviously, we need some people who are good at CSS, but even if you don't know CSS, you can still help by designing banners and other spiffy images.
Also, pinging @Hypernova since he asked about this.
