MarioQuest 2 keeps crashing

I've tried different compatibility modes and I've tried to play the game in different ways, but I just can't stop it from crashing on the first level. It's not even a "This program has stopped responding" kind of crash, the game just locks up for a few seconds and then shuts down. I've played dozens upon dozens of fan games recently, and I haven't had a problem like this with any of them (not even MarioQuest 1).

Anyone have any ideas that might help?

Does it happen around the part where you burn the grass and a Thwomp is seen at the right, shooting lasers? It always seems to crash for me around that spot. I'm not sure why this sorta thing happens. Do you have an older computer, like XP or 98 perhaps? I have a Windows 98 here that I haven't tested MarioQuest 2 on, but I hope it'll work when I get to it.

That's exactly where it happens. Maybe I should try to run the game on a VM and see what happens.
