You can explore levels in Sonic games and have more reason to do so. In fact, many Mario levels only have one path while Sonic is famous for having several.

I feel like you hate Sonic games purely because you're a Mario fanboy. That's fine, but you should know the SEGA and Nintendo rivalry ended decades ago. LOL

I just think that sonic is just a bad franchise, Sega plz bring back super monkey ball PLZ!, as for Mario having one way Super Mario 64

Keep in mind that Mario came from an era where video games at most had a story of "save the princess" or "defeat this villain." Sonic, on the other hand, came about long after those basic storylines were first set, and thus games gained more depth.

The sonic games are not so colourful with a generic story, Mario also has a generic story but at least it has colours that are so bright that i can't fall asleep, Remember Crush the castle? that had a bland colour spectrum, as for Angry birds that has colourful visuals
