I write in cursive but it is a pointless skill in day to day scenarios. I guess the idea is that cursive is the proper way of writing but, since we are too uncoordinated to write in cursive when we first learn to write and therefore have to go through the process of learning cursive after learning an already perfectly legible way of writing, it seems to me that things would have been much easier if people had never written in cursive to begin with. Now we have immortalized official documents written in cursive, like the U.S.A.'s Declaration of Independence, so there will probably always be people writing in cursive. Then the main reason to know cursive would be to understand the writing of people who write in cursive.
It's also a little faster and can look really pretty if the writer is good at it.
