I think music competitions can only work if there is a decent amount of active members who make music to begin with. I don't see a lot of people learning how to make music just to partake in a competition because, as you said, it's much harder to learn how to make music than it is to pick up a pencil and draw. I agree with Thunderbro on polling this since it might not be worth having music competitions regularly anymore.
I think competitions in general need to feel like more of a big deal on here. Right now they seem only slightly more important than a forum game, which I think is part of the reason why involvement is so low in most competitions. Perhaps if there was some way to present them as more of a grand affair we would see a rise in participation.
One idea on my mind is some sort of Hall of Fame where we display the top 3 entries from each competition so people can view/play/listen to/etc. them. We can also make this a prominent link on the main site. This could both introduce main site members to the forums through our competitions and incentivize people to participate, since if they land in the top 3 their entries will not just be forgotten having only been seen by active forum members at the time. This will make winners feel more like a part of MFGG's history, and everybody likes to feel important!
