This miiiiiiiiiiight not be the most useful topic of all time, unless the number 1,700 holds some sort of super-special significance I'm not aware of.
With that aside, I'd recommend looking at topic IDs rather than the Statistics box, as topic ID numbers never change. In contrast, the numbers in the Statistics box aren't always accurate, often because of topics getting split, merged, or deleted. For example, I just hit the "Recount and Rebuild" option in the Admin Control Panel to update the Statistics box, and now the thread count is under 1,700 again.
