i dont have a degree but i can code, and its served me well. vinny's expressed some concerns to me that there might be places i cant get to without a degree (high management type stuff: hopefully he comes in and elaborates) but honestly a code bootcamp or similar is going to do you far better.
i might go out on a limb and say gamedev school is a scam. some people apparently get hired and i guess you can learn other gamedev-related stuff there like level design? idk? but if you want to learn to code, do not go to gamedev school
