Now, will they go back to the classic formula? That's what I'm not entirely sure about. For what it's worth, Color Splash WAS a good deal closer to the original games than Sticker Star was, even having an EXP system of sorts in the game, and the writing/character variety was much better in that one as well. Even if they don't straight up revisit the original formula 1:1, I think that after Sticker Star they ARE trying to move the series closer in the direction of a proper RPG again.
In that regard it kind of reminds me of Super Mario Party. It's like on one hand there was this desire to revert back to the classic formula because that's what audiences wanted, but there was also the (understandable) desire to be new and different and fresh. Unfortunately in the cases of both Super Mario Party and Color Splash the new and different things just make the games worse instead of fresh.
