I've said this elsewhere and re-watching the trailer now makes me feel the same way. It looks better than CS, but considering what we had decades before SS and CS was even much better than this it's hard for me to be excited by these tiny incremental improvements in each game. I'm not saying that the team should just abandon their new vision for paper mario to return to the old formula (i'm also not saying they shouldn't...), I just wish that, if they were insistent on sticking to this new formula and making it work, they'd also be willing to compromise with fans and take what worked from the old formula and put their own twist on it. The reluctance to do things like have unique NPCs, cool partners, and good story/character writing that doesn't make every NPC have the same "quirky" personality and that doesn't overly rely on paper puns is irritating to me.
Really, if they added in partners and unique NPCs, added more depth to the stories in each chapter, and had leveling up and a cool battle system I could live with the paper-centric storylines and aesthetics and the Sticker Star/Color Splash style of writing. Right now the battle system looks super interesting, but if we don't also get leveling up of some sort then the gameplay will still be extremely flawed and what we've seen of the writing and chapters has not looked interesting enough to engage me on that level either.
I hope it's good, I'm just not getting my hopes up too high.
