It's weird because nothing decent has really replaced forums. Forums, instant messengers, and chat rooms all co-existed just fine for years.
Forums have a lot of good aspects that haven't really been replaced by anything else. Particularly, community, the longevity and archiving of conversations, and personalized atmosphere.
Also many forums are still way more alive than MFGG. For example (I've mentioned this before), just look at the Animal Crossing-focused Bell Tree Forums, and look how many people are online. Or look at SMWCentral.
I honestly don't know what happened, or why MFGG has lost its activity. Though it has a lot to do with discord, I think it also has to do with the drama that occurred way back, and the way the forums got too serious and strict for a while, then by the time it turned back to a casual community-driven vibe, too many people had already left.
