Forums, instant messengers, and chat rooms all co-existed just fine for years.Yeah, pretty much. A lot of forums are still really active like GBATemp, Smashboards, PokeCommunity, Serebii, etc., most of which are as old as the MFGG forums. What killed the MFGG forums was a combination of abandoning the Invision forums in '09 requiring everyone to re-register, the split in 2010, and then abandoning the new forums for yet ANOTHER forum requiring people to register yet again (which was also abandoned for this one). Instead of trying to help the forums grow and expand, the admins forbid any kind of fun community talk, current news/events, general video game discussion, and made it strictly about fangames and development, making it much less accessible and far more of a niche community than what it used to be. The drama didn't help either.
Forums have a lot of good aspects that haven't really been replaced by anything else. Particularly, community, the longevity and archiving of conversations, and personalized atmosphere.
Also many forums are still way more alive than MFGG. For example (I've mentioned this before), just look at the Animal Crossing-focused Bell Tree Forums, and and look how many people are online. Or look at SMWCentral.
I honestly don't know what happened, or why MFGG has lost its activity. Though it has a lot to do with discord, I think it also has to do with the drama that occurred way back, and the way the forums got too serious and strict for a while, then by the time it turned back to a casual community-driven vibe, too many people had already left.
