As for the sprites, I think OssieTheOstrich's style might work better in a more conventional Mario platformer. His Mario looks friendly and goofy.
I think KrystalPhantasm's style would do a great job of showing movement of Mario's hands, which could work great if there's a bigger emphasis on punching. KrystalPhantasm's Mario looks a little faster and has more attitude.
@Gate's engine would be an excellent choice for a collaborative project. It has tons of features, and the developer is obviously still active, which is nice. Also, Gate's engine uses GM, which most people are familiar with. While Gate's latest engine requires GM Studio 2, it's free to get started with it, which is another big plus.
Also, if y'all are serious about making a collaborative project, I'd be more than happy to contribute a level or two.
