@Chadook One of Elon Musk's earlier businesses was X.com, which later became PayPal. I think X.com's owners realized that having a more descriptive name that's less likely to be associated with shady enterprises would be good for business!
Elon apparently has a deep sentimental attachment to the X.com name and decided he liked that name better than Twitter. (This is what happens when people have more money than sense!)
In the long run, Elon is toying with the idea of making X.com a "superapp" that combines social media, payments, and other features. This kind of thing has worked better in Asian countries than in North America. It would also be more likely to work if a broader base of users trusted Elon and Twitter in general.
