I do really enjoy SMBW, but I do agree with Coco that NSBW is "It's more like NSMB with a gimmick thrown on top."
Without my nostalgia glasses I can see it as a kinda bland game in the surface, but the amount of polish they gave to some of 2D Mario's ideas, I'd say it's basically more NSMB, which is a good game by itself, so giving it a good shake was the right move in my opinion.
By itself it is a solid expirience that I would maybe give it another try (after beating it 4 times already when it was "new") just for the fun factor, a thing I cannot say for NSMB2 or NSMBU.
