Miraheze is a useful option when it's not feasible to host your own copy of MediaWiki on your own domain. Buying a domain and running a server costs money, and installing and configuring a Web service like MediaWiki takes some degree of expertise. Hosting on Miraheze is cheaper and simpler than hosting on your own server. However, in the case of MFGG, we already have a server we can use for hosting, and I'm capable of maintaining self-hosted MediaWiki software. There are some advantages of hosting MediaWiki on your own domain when possible - we have complete control over the database, we can configure it however we want, and having the Wiki on the MFGG domain boosts SEO.
Having a full list of Mario/Nintendo fan communities could be an interesting project!
We disabled new account registration on the MFGG Wiki because we weren't getting much activity, and because spambot accounts were trying to register accounts every day.
