I've seen very people complaining about the use of the Hello Engine in the past decade or so.
Around 2010, the Hello Engine was very popular and beginner-friendly - which resulted in a lot of people using it to churn out uncreative games with poorly-designed levels. This also meant the Hello Engine was a frequent target of criticism on MFGG. It didn't help that the Hello Engine 3 had weird physics and was poorly-optimized and hard to customize. Hello made some improvements to his engine in the ensuing years, but the Hello Engine scene died pretty much the instant Mario Maker came out.
That said, if you're looking for a GM-friendly engine with a lot of features, Gate's engine is better.
