Around 2010, the Hello Engine was very popular and beginner-friendly - which resulted in a lot of people using it to churn out uncreative games with poorly-designed levels. This also meant the Hello Engine was a frequent target of criticism on MFGG. It didn't help that the Hello Engine 3 had weird physics and was poorly-optimized and hard to customize. Hello made some improvements to his engine in the ensuing years, but the Hello Engine scene died pretty much the instant Mario Maker came out.
That said, if you're looking for a GM-friendly engine with a lot of features, Gate's engine is better.
I would switch to Anniversary Edition right now, but:
1. There's an input issue
2. I've already put so much into my Hello modification and
3. There are practically no graphics I would have to change to make it look like All-Stars SMB3/SMA4/SMW in the Hello Engine. Anniversary Edition has a lot, and it would take probably a week and a half more than AE to give Gatete Mario Engine 9 that look.
4. I know it's a problem for some, but I like the fact that HME has bosses.
