The Mario niche really doesn't carry the same weight that it used to. In fact, I've gotten complaints over the past year about competitions that focus on Mario content instead of being a broader focus. I don't think as many people as you think would be angry if you simply had a new section on the current site for Non-Mario content.
If you're going to do this, it could definitely be a separate section on the site but not a separate site.
