My Ultimate Pointless Quiz Showdown didn't support simultaneous multiplayer, but it did include an easy way to record high scores. Also, it wasn't a Monthly Mayhem event - I just awarded the top scorers with coins.
With most of the games on this list, I don't know how you'd attempt to measure high scores. For example, SMB2 doesn't even keep track of your score, and it doesn't have any way for more than one player to play at the same time.
It should also be noted that emulator netplay is often very difficult to get right - depending on the system, you have to jump through a lot of hoops just to get a few players to connect. So yeah, there's a bunch of reasons why that isn't ideal for a Monthly Mayhem event.
