DONE Add Pride Flags to the country flag options

Any kind of automated system is going to be inaccurate. IP addresses aren't great at detecting location and you'd need to constantly be updating your ip to location database to keep it roughly accurate. There's the geolocation JavaScript API which has a lot more accuracy (especially for mobile users) but I don't think people want to be giving their exact location when they're logging into MFGG. Also it gets a lot less accurate when dealing with other kinds of devices (not to mention it can be forged too lol).

I'm not really sure we're too accurate on the country flags themselves anyway. I know we're not using official country names and I'm sure at least some of the countries we have probably have either changed flags or names or maybe even don't exist or do exist and are absent since they were originally created. Countries are just a political designation anyway; they're about as real as time or Mario.

Another note: you can already set your location to "gay" or anything else:

(which isn't any different at all from how big sites like Twitter ask for your Location). The flag field is just labeled "your country", which doesn't really mean much.

It's already a de-facto "flag" field, might as well let people fly whichever MFGG-approved flag they want. idc much if things like the anarchist black flag are added or whatever either. I also wouldn't be opposed to it just being a custom image of the same dimensions, but I'm sure we'd lose a bit of visual consistency there.

idk I think it's more "dumb" to put your head in the sand and ignore how features are being used than be so prescriptivist about it

Vinny, with all due respect, you are so wrong on this. I'm honestly surprised at you.

Having LGBT pride isn't about sexual preference, it's about being proud of who you are in the face of oppression and showing that you support others with the banner.

And are you refusing to budge on this even though majority commenters on this thread including multiple staff members are cool with this?

I don't like that we are taking the flag system this seriously only when it's convenient, and treating it like a joke even on a temporary basis other times.

All we are asking for on MFGG is a harmless flag, it's not like we are trying to change the site's theme.

If the field name "location" is the problem then change the name of the field to "flag" or something.

That is a valid point, but I don't really agree. If people's MFGG profiles were professional profiles of some kind then I'd understand, but that's not the case. Why not give the members something they want that's completely harmless and is easy to implement?
I'm not even someone who is dying to see this implemented or who would have even thought to bring this up, but now that it has been brought up and people want it why not just do it?

LOL. I don't think there's anything wrong with Vinny (or anyone else) wanting the country field to represent countries (though at least one country uses a rainbow flag (obv the very political decision of what counts as a country or not is something I'm sure the MFGG staff take very seriously and we probably don't recognize the republic of china so we don't violate the people's republic of china's one china policy and oh whoops now im starting international incidents in asides)), but yeah this comment:

is a bit out of line. Reducing LGBT+ issues to being just about 'sex' is a pretty common tactic of The Haters:tm: so it's best to avoid terminology like that (especially since it's not very accurate).

iirc it was never in rotation (since Black Squirrel only wanted people to use their "real" countries) and I'm not sure who made it, but I remember it too.

Also a reminder that we have flags for absurd countries where we don't and won't have any members like... Antarctica and North Korea.

First of all, Kim Jong Un is a gamer so it's entirely possible he'd join MFGG. Secondly, while Antarctica isn't a country of it's own and is just territories claimed by other countries, I suppose it'd be pretty interesting if you were posting from Antarctica and flying the flag of it rather than just the flag of the nation that claims territory there.

I think calling Vinny homophobic because he doesn't want to add the pride flag is a stretch. That'd be like saying if he didn't want to add a Mario themed flag to the list for Mario Day because Mario isn't a country he'd be bigoted against Mario fans. It's definitely possible that he is just saying he doesn't want any non-country flags on the list because he is homophobic, but I don't think it would be wise to assume worse of someone than what there is evidence for.

Again I am in favor of the pride flag being available, but I don't think calling people who aren't homophobic because they disagree is the best way to accomplish this.

If it was truly an attempt at an analogy, it wasn't a very good one and stuff like that serves only to escalate drama.

I think I'd be more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt if there wasn't already so much much evidence that we weren't taking the flag field that seriously until just now.

Not saying he IS, just saying it's an awful questionable take tbh.

Friends, I'm afraid my thread has gone off the rails and I'd like to bring it back on track. Individual members (esp staff) being homophobic is surely a cause for concern but I don't want it to be what this thread is about and would prefer that kind of discussion goes elsewhere.

Here are my proposals to make everyone happy:

1. Change "country" to "flag" and add whatever flags we think would be fun to have and remove any we think wouldn't be fun to have. Pride flags are a given here.

2. Keep the field "country" and add flags of any possible country, at least on request. This would include the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands, which officially uses a pride flag as their flag. Hopefully update the country list to use the officially recognized country names as well.

3. Keep the field "country" and come up with a strict document defining what MFGG considers a country or not and keep the country list up to date, removing and adding what's necessary. Since non-country flags have been done for events or placeholders before, we should still allow pride flags but for pride month only in this case.

4. Replace "country" field with a custom icon field. Flags can be a default gallery that we can add to as we see fit.


5. Do nothing and be wrong for everyone!

Solutions 1 and 4 seem like the easiest fixes and should not upset anybody. I personally think 4 is the best solution as it would allow for extended customization for those who don't care that much about having a flag next to their names, such as myself.
