Looks great! The thing is, it seems kind of weird that Mario only looks in one direction, but that might just be me. Maybe you should make him look over his shoulder? I don't know. It's up to you. Also, Mario seems kind of stiff, except for the moving hand when he scratches his nose and when he looks to the side. I don't know if this counts as saying "it's not expreeeessive enough" (as you put it), but I'm just trying to critique the sprite to the best of my ability. Keep up the good work!

Nah. You at least explained how you thought it wasn't expressive enough, and how it could be improved. I'll definitely work on that.

The Mario Bros sprites you see on the left are the standard ones, while the ones on the right are more akin to Super Mario Flashback's art style. When I ask for constructive criticism, usually people are recommending changes that'd make them look more cartoonish like the ones on the right, so I've decided to give it a shot. The reason I haven't done that in the past, and will stick with the standard ones, is that it's contradictory to the style I'm going for with these sprites. But hey, tell me what you think. All I really did was change the color palette and shading, so I didn't really change Mario's stance to look more expressive and less stiff like he is in the actual games.

Who knows. If enough people prefer that style, or simply like it, I'll include that art style as an option for the game I'm making these sprites for.

The ones on the right are cool and are more akin to the actual games than the ones on the left, I don't think the ones on the right would fit in with the fangame though, since the ones on the left, look good as it is.

I felt unsatisfied with Mario's sprite, so I decided to update it. I updated Luigi as well so it'd fit better with the updated Mario. Which do you think has improved the most? Marion or Weegee?

For those shy about becoming a sprite artist, here's how much improvement can happen with 2 years of practice. At first, I was just trying to make Waluigi in an already existing art style, but starting with version 3, it quickly evolved into its own art style, and here we are. I can't believe I ever thought that first version, or even that fourth version was good. I cringe just looking at them.

It occurred to me now that Wario and Waluigi with his elf-like ears and red nose could suit well in a Link's Awakening remake or an Ocarina of Time 2D

Great work! I agree with Hungry San about Waluigi's face. I think the reason the older one looks a little better is because his nose is more pronounced and sticks out from his face. Maybe just adding a few pixels of the nose outside of the face like in the other sprites would help it.

For Super Mario Coalition, I thought I'd take a page from Odyssey, and include some cosmetic customization. The recolors will be purchasable with coins in the shops of each hub world, and the alternate costumes will be unlockable through specific tasks. Here are Luigi's:
