i think they're alright... not the best way to make something scary/creepy, but they work

I ain't about 'em.

But I also don't really like any kind of horror.

They're okay, especially in horror games like Resident Evil or Silent Hill.

In my honest opinion, jumpscares, on their own, are not effective horror technique. Basically, you're getting a loud noise and playing it (loudly!) at a moment the player/viewer was not expecting. Their heart rate jumps up and, possibly literally, so do they. However, a car horn being blown as you're walking in front achieves a very similar effect. And I really don't believe you're going to have nightmares about a car horn (at least, in most cases).

Good horror, in my opinion, is the kind of stuff that will make me hesitant to walk around in the dark at night. Make me question things around me. Stuff like that. A more "slow burn" horror.

I have nightmares about car horns, DustinVideoGamesMaster.

They are a tool in the horror toolbox. When used correctly they can contribute greatly to the experience, otherwise, they're just stressful.

good when used sparingly
the original friday the 13th has an absolutely perfect jump scare, but few movies can pull it off that well

Absolutely cheap scare tactics when used by itself out of left field. If its to be expected in advanced like a punishment for messing up, sure I'll accept it.

Pretty garbage trope that's changed horror movies. When used sparingly and effectivley like in Halloween 2018, they're okay.

I'd say, like most everyone else here, when used sparingly and carefully planned out, they're okay.

I although I personally don't like them at all if too they're sudden or accompanied by a very loud sound. I think my heart is kinda fragile, so I usually stay away from things with jumpscares since I'm worried I might have an actual heart attack, which I've heard generally bad things about.

They have to be very few in number to work. They get a reaction so to say that they are useless doesn't make sense to me, but if the only scares in a movie are jump scares then the movie isn't really scary. I much prefer eerie things that will stick with me and make me want to curl up under the sheets when I hear a noise in my room.

I tend to agree with @DustinVG. Jumpscares can be effective when they're very well-done, but most of the time they're not.

To me, jumpscares are like the salt in a horror dish. They can very much add to the flavor and I like them a lot when done right and in proper quantities, but if you hand me a salt shaker and call it a meal, I'm not going to be very impressed.

I quite like jumpscares, but like Roo says you gotta use them frugally or (for me at least) they become basically ineffective.

I think it's also important to work on your telegraphing as well. If you constantly use the same rhythm to build up to a jumpscare the player/viewer will eventually be able to tell, so I like a good jumpscare that you don't realize is a jumpscare until it actually happens. Usually these are visual but I think you can do some sound design tricks to do it as well.

if done right, they can add an extra layer of tension to the movie because afterwards you're not sure if there will be a jumpscare or not. it's kinda like the movie announcing that things aren't safe.

for me a perfect jumpscare can carry an entire movie. you only need one.

They seem lame and cheap, I prefer atmospheric horror instead of trying to scare someone by surprise, like one present in path of exile. However to experience the entirety of it you should consider getting some poe exalts, because otherwise getting necessary gear to complete the game would be very hard, especially endgame bosses with uber atziri and shaper.

Giving heart attacks since 2013

Anyways, it really depends on the context and the execution of the jumpscare.

They're either lame, or fantastic. Needs good directorial effort.
