Yeah, I was actually trying to find more of my posts but you've gotta be logged in to use any of the search features so I can't do much if I don't remember my password from 13 years ago. I sorta wish you could still change your password on the archive boards just so you could search. Do any mods here have control over that or nah?

EDIT: nevermind password recovery still works

It's been a little while since logins worked properly on the IPB archive. Last night we made an update to the archive.mfgg.net domain settings, and now logins and searches should work properly.
Course clear! You got a card.

The best thing about fixing the IPB archive is that you can now do SEARCHES and check your PRIVATE MESSAGES.

Still better than my first few posts in the MFGG IPB, and I was like 14 at that time. I thought you joined around 2011 when you first reached out to me that one of my games was featured in your videos. Then again I was pretty out of touch at that time.

But yeah, I was the one who fixed the IPB archive. Turns out the config files were set to HTTP instead of HTTPS.

Ehhh what's two weeks among friends.

I remember being around for the tenth anniversary, and we were impressed back then that this site was still around - web communities aren't meant to last that long, and given the challenges this place has faced (I mean, Super Mario Maker is essentially direct competition from Nintendo, right?), it's even more extraordinary. The idea that a fan site can be older than many of its users baffles the mind, and yet here we are.

I'm not stopping long, but I might as well tell a story for those who like a bit of history. Shortly after the move from IPB, a retirement home for former MFGG admins (and some other old people) was set up, and I was there for some reason. It lasted a few years before naturally coming to an end (which means we retired from retirement(?)), but it was a really good time with some really good people. I'll probably never meet Shadsy or Kritter or Retriever II or Techokami or Trasher/Kins/Scods in real life, but they are the bestests. There has never been a better topic than "things that exist".

And I like the way I can be at the opposite side of the internet and run into coverage on Sim Refinery. Or Reelism 2. Or sprites I drew fifteen years ago.

Once we looked down on you from our new home and laughed, but we soon got bored once we realised there was nothing to laugh about. I expected this board to implode, but it didn't - it survived. Traditionally forums crash and burn, but this one moved on and became something new - that's insane, so whatever you're doing... keep doing it?

As for me, I fix gaming history on Sega Retro. Did I ever get death threats as admin? Can't remember. I got a marriage proposal once, and spent an afternoon banning people spamming the boards as different types of bread. I blocked "Hovis Best of Both" before the account even got to post - that's a weird highlight. I left some backdoors open on the old boards "just in case", but have since forgotten what they were, so that went well.

I'm well aware the odds of you seeing my reply are slim-to-none, but I appreciate that you bothered to come here and celebrate the anniversary with a smile... let alone at all!

Your odd works meant a lot to me. How you championed Thingio, or your behemoth masterpiece "Super Hyper Paper Deluxe Mario Bros. Galaxy World Land 4" starring the immensely humourous Quackers the Duck. It all seems like a lot of bizarre juvenile s*** to you nowadays, I'm willing to bet - but those silly things (and the many silly things of others) helped shape my sense of humour and inclination towards being creative. I guarantee you'd find this hard to believe, but it's true! I even remember an old website where you drew attention to really old, hardly-known games and even did sprite rips of them. I wished that site was still up, because it had a wealth of incomprehensible graphics one could use in a silly joke game. I wish there was more of that culture prevalent in present-day fangaming, but alas.

I know we didn't always see eye-to-eye; as I recall, we once bickered over the purpose of the wiki many many years back. I think a lot of it stemmed from misunderstandings... but you bringing up that "retirement" forum that you were a part of almost puts that into a new perspective for me. I really hope you didn't think we were mishandling MFGG, a site you put a ton of work into back in the day. I couldn't think of anything further from the truth, really. I do want to apologize for letting that happen at all, even if it was a long time ago. It was a silly thing, really.

I myself don't really visit here anymore, but I've been feeling a bit nostalgic because of the anniversary and have been keeping an eye on this thread for whatever reason. I'm glad I did! It's nice seeing Mr. BS himself show up. Err, maybe I should re-word that. Oh well, you get the idea.

Cheers, Black Squirrel. I hope your eTirement was worthwhile Smile

Hey Black Squirrel! [Image: soveryhappy.gif] It's really nice to see you again! [Image: biggrin.gif]

Yeah, even 10 years is a big accomplishment for a website. With the rate and direction the internet is growing in favor of social media and centralized platforms at the cost of traditional forums and niche websites, it's really surprising we've lasted this far. Especially with direct competition from Nintendo with Super Mario Maker to satiate that craving for designing unique Mario levels like you mentioned, along with a large portion of our demographic's interest shifting from fangames and ROM hacks to indie games. I expected MFGG to die back in 2010 when The Split happened, but that never occurred. At worst, MFGG went somewhat dormant at times afterwards, but it never died. That is some outstanding resilience. It's crazy to think that MFGG existed years before a lot of our current members were even born.

A retirement home for former MFGG Admins was set up after moving from IPB? That sounds interesting and cozy. Yeah, those guys are awesome, especially ShadowMan and RII. Klobber was really cool too. I remember your tilesets being extremely popular back in the day (are they still? sounds like it) and trying to do that well myself. You were the gold standard.

So you're a gaming historian for Sega Retro? That's really awesome! Historians are a vital part of keeping the legacy of gaming alive and accessible. I'm actually just starting to get into Sonic and Sega in general after being strictly Nintendo my entire life, so I'll definitely check out Sega Retro. Yeah, I really miss the old antics and craziness that transpired on the Taloncrossing forums. What kind of backdoors to the old boards are you talking about? Hopefully you can remember them and resurrect the IPB forums! [Image: nod.gif]

You should definitely come by again sometime. MFGG isn't MFGG without Black Squirrel.

Way to spill the secret beans! That was a great time, it think it sort of started out as a bit of a "we'll start our own forum, with blackjack and hookers" moment, one of the few online forums/communities where I genuinely felt like I could be myself around a group of people who "got" me. Even Joey ended up being a really cool friend for the brief time we were all there. We also had a few great Minecraft servers, which was the hot new game at the time.

Oh and MFGG was a cool time too. It definitely gave me something to do in my late teenage years and I'd like to believe my contributions added something but I've become so detatched from this place in the last few years I 100% honestly forget it exists and only get reminded from time to time on twitter or the like. A lot of wasted hours here though, hundreds of hours spent ripping sprites and putting them in Clickteam "libs" that I'm positive nobody uses, 10 years making a game only for it to end up a buggy mess and having my HDD crash, losing any chance at "finishing" it properly though nobody really played it anyway, and far too much time spent mucking about in a place that outgrew me years before.

I could never join the Discord or whatever you crazy kids are using these days, stuff like that just isn't for me. Nothing beats the old days of forums, hundreds of users posting a mile a minute, every F5 was a new adventure and people were just thrilled to be a part of a community of like-minded people.

Echoing what Shadsy said, the fact that Nintendo hasn't burned MFGG in hellfire is the real celebration here. Given how absurdly protective of their brand they've become (eg. even official Paper Mario games can't have their own original modified character designs anymore due to company policy).

The backlog of awesome games and creative fun here is phenomenal. MFGG is still a super fun site to spend time on, looking back, remembering the community and downloading games.

Also crazy to see Black Squirrel, Kritter, Mario Gamer and everyone here! I'd still love to see people come back and revitalize a sense of active nostalgic community. Play and stream old fangames together and stuff. Idk. Maybe somedaayyyy

Whoa whoa whoa whoa! We've got ShadowMan, Mario Gamer, Toni, Cruise Elroy, Kritter, MegaTailzChao, Greeno, and even Black Squirrel in the party!? What a celebration this is! [Image: soveryhappy.gif]

To further expand on my earlier post, it's really amazing to see MFGG live this long, and it looks like it might last for another 20 years or so! Even today, we're still getting posts, games, and sprites! I remember when I first saw the site in mid-2012, when MFGG had the classic MFGG 2.0 skin and Crazy Lakitu DX and Gravity Goomba were some of the latest games. Boy, this place sure has changed since then! At least it still has its essence, however, which is making and sharing cool, fun games! I've learned so much and have been inspired many times in this awesome galaxy! I'm very happy that MFGG still hosts its oldest sprites, games, etc. I've seen some other long-running sprite/fangame websites remove their older content, which really sucks. For some reason, I find such old stuff very nostalgic! Someday, the main site should get a skin based on its very first incarnation! I could see myself using that one!

@Kritter Oh come on! Don't be so hard on yourself! Lots of people played and love Mario Land: Minigame Mayhem! That includes me! I even know a couple people in real life who have played and seem to enjoy your game! There are a lot of good minigames in there! It may have some bugs, but it's no "buggy mess"! I say those 10 years really paid off! As for the Clickteam libs, well, who knows -- maybe someone will make a game that only uses sprites from libs. That would be cool, wouldn't it? That actually sounds like a fun idea! I agree with you on forums, however.

I first posted here when I was 12/13... back in 2002. Good times but my how time flies.

Christ, seeing all these old accounts rise from the grave has made me realize I've been here for fifteen years now. Where does the time go.

Here's to the next twenty! If the site actually survives for that long I owe you all a drink.
