I have a couple of questions related to my profile.
1. What do coins do? Can I buy stuff with them?
2. How do I get badges?

1. Coins are currently useless at the moment. The only thing you can do with them is donate them to someone else or show them off.
2. You can get badges by winning or participating in various forum events like competitions.

What competitions? I don't feel like I have enough free time to participate in any contests.

Sprite Competitions, Drawing Competition, Minigame Competitions. You usually have 1-2 weeks to finish your entry so it's not something that needs to be done all at once. There's also isometric collaborations with similar timeframes for entries. If you submit anything to the main site and link your main site account to your forum acount, a Submitter badge will be displayed showing how much you have submitted to MFGG. And various other things like Easter Egg Hunts, E3 Bingo, etc.
