I've been threatening to make this for over three years. And now I finally made it! Or at least a demo of it.

So what is this, you might ask? It's a Fire Emblem-like SRPG with a zany, irreverent tone and chapters inspired by everybody's favorite fangames galaxy! Each chapter is based on a different fangame series or community happening. It's a throwback to the days when people did stuff like this more often, although I hope it'll be fun even for those unfamiliar with the characters and scenarios.

This is a four-chapter demo. Many things are subject to change, but I hope you can see through the placeholder graphics and dormant engine bugs.

There's a full credits section in the readme file, but @Beatrice and @Nite Shadow get big thanks for making cool art that I used in this, and @fireball3k deserves a shoutout for encouraging me to make this happen.

If people like this, I'd be happy to expand on this project! A full-fledged "Mario Emblem" crossover is probably too ambitious, but I'd love to add more MFGG-based characters and chapters.

Known Issues
[+]Spoiler
  • Lots of characters need custom overworld sprites, so I just used ripped graphics as placeholders - I'll need some help if you want characters to look unique
  • There's a striking degree of inconsistency in style and quality regarding portrait art - if anyone wants to make these nicer, be my guest
  • Some tiles, especially the roads, use the wrong palette, so they don't match up properly (this is a problem with the original rip I found, which I'll need to expand on or replace); there are also tile alignment issues with shorelines
  • Some maps, especially #3 and #4, are a little bare-bones; future versions might spice them up a bit
  • I'm still working on optimization, and Chapter 2 might be laggy on your computer; if it is, it's because of a chapter-specific mechanic (you'll know what it is when you see it)
  • You can't save yet, but there's a chapter select feature on the title screen that lets you choose the level you want to play
  • Characters jump to their future spaces instead of marching there
  • If I expand this and make a more connected story, I'll probably have a conversation before and after every chapter, instead of having one only at the beginning of the chapters
  • Some "nice-to-have" features, like chests, doors, and support conversations, aren't here

I might even accept requests! If you'd like your character to appear in MFGG Emblem, I might be able to make that happen. I'm more likely to accept requests if you fall into at least one of the following categories:
  • You're willing to contribute sprites and portraits for the project (especially anything specific I'd need for your chapter/character)
  • You have a distinctive identity (I know what class you should be in, or you have a special weapon you should use)
  • You're reasonably well-known on MFGG (for example, you've been a staff member or completed a cool project)
Want to design a chapter?

If you have any ideas for a chapter you'd like to see, be sure to include the following information:
  • The characters and text that should be in the opening dialogue (which most chapters have)
  • A sketch of the map - ideally, something that's an appropriate size for a 480x270 map with 16x16 tiles
  • A reasonably detailed list of enemies, their classes, and their approximate formation - for example, "there should be three Pegasus Knights on the northwest mountain and two Cavaliers guarding the bridge"
  • The name of the chapter boss (if applicable - not all chapters have a boss) and whether the boss can move
  • A list of any playable characters that need to be usable in that particular chapter
I can't promise I'll accept every request, but if your game is notable and you make things easy for me, I'll probably say yes.[/spoiler]

I've gotten some reports of a bug where you can move characters an endless number of times if you view their stats at the right time. I added this to my "to fix" list, and I'll patch it in the next update.

Overly Detailed Sprite Stuff

Since a couple of people expressed interest in helping with MFGG Emblem sprites, here's some information to help get you started. Feel free to do as much or as little as you like. I'm always grateful when people are interested in helping.

Number of Frames
I'm focusing on the sprites used in the overworld map. Every character has 18 frames of animation. However, the most important animations are when the character is on the map and when the character is raising his or her weapon after being selected. Also, you may be able to duplicate a lot of these frames.

Size
Every frame should be approximately 16 x 16 pixels. You can make them a little bit bigger - for example, if a character is raising a weapon and it juts outside the frame. However, the main part of the character needs to be able to fit inside a 16 x 16 square.

Style and Palette
Unless you want to redo every graphic in the game (which I'm not recommending), I recommend basing your sprites on the following rips. Most of the sprites I need are going to be simpler than the ones used in the actual GBA games.
  • Sacred Stones rip (this has the largest selection of characters, and it's the most useful reference)
  • FE 7 rip (most, but not all, of these are in Sacred Stones)
  • Binding Blade rip (again, most of these are in the other two games, although characters like Roy are unique to Binding Blade)
  • This place has a good list of fan sprites.

What I Need
High Priority
These are characters with unique designs that bear little resemblance to characters seen in any actual FE game.
  • Cruise Elroy: Ghost with boxing gloves; I'd like to emphasize the gloves since they're his weapon
  • Dudim: An SMW dolphin - I think we all know who this character is!
  • Hypernova: I should check with him to confirm how he wants to look (so here's a ping for @Hypernova)
  • Langton: A green Boo with a Cap'n Crunch hat
  • Littlelum: He's basically a white circle with a goofy toothy grin
  • Miles: He's not in this demo, but this game needs a Batbro!

Medium Priority
  • Friendly Dictator: A Purplian with a snazzy suit
  • HylianDev: Kind of a purple Link - I'm not sure if anyone has done this, but you could probably mix and match different pieces of the various Myrmidon and Mage sprites to get this
  • Techokami: This game needs a Security Ninja - I don't know if anyone has made a ninja overworld sprite
  • Vinny: I might need to be a swordsman with a football helmet - maybe

Pretty much everyone else is a lower priority. I could need help with certain enemies later on, but some of those will be easy.

I love this tech demo! Admittedly I never played Fire Emblem don't hurt me but I kind of get part of the gist of it. MFGG Emblem sounds like it could be a lot of fun to make and to play!

If I may suggest a chapter:

-What if there were a group of obscure MFGGers from nowadays booked rooms at MFGG Hotel? When they arrive at MFGG Hotel, there turned out to be a syntax error it opens a portal between dimensions.

Once the chapter is won (can be any length, really), they realize the forums are being updated from PHPBB to MyBB. MFGG Hotel opens back up and everyone is happy with their stay.

-I'd also appreciate being in it, even if I was a one-time character. I wouldn't know what class to be though... My main weapon would be a Koopa shell (specifically the Lazy Shell) and maybe I could just be an Archer with a unique weapon?

-I would also like to contribute sprites for the sake of the game! Not sure how to draw them though.

Pretty fun for what it is! The menus seemed a bit buggy at points, letting you open up menus on top of menus, seemed like, but with a few well-placed variables and if statements, it should be easy to fix.

@Dustinvgmaster (and others who reported similar bugs): I *think* I've patched all the problems with menus being able to open on top of other menus, as well as the "being able to move endlessly" problem. These should be fixed when I release the next update.

@Yakibomb Don't worry - I won't hurt you with a Killing Edge or anything! That chapter idea is really cool - I'll see if I can make it happen! Your character was on my "characters who should maybe be in this" list, and if you can get me a few good sprites, I'd be happy to add a fat rat to this. You can probably use the existing rips as a starting point.

I played a bit and it's pretty nice! I played some of FE: Sacred Stones and I got a similar vibe from your game. Also, do you plan to have the fight scenes? Having those in the game would be cool. But, if you don't want to have fight scenes, then maybe you should have a message box say "_____ dealt 25 damage to _____!" or "_____'s attack missed!" since it's a little confusing when you just here a sound effect and no message about who got damaged or if your attack hit at all. But overall, I can't wait to see a final product. Maybe I'll make some sprites for myself and get myself in the game!

I when I pressed spacebar to view the general stats, I found that other buttons would still register, making possible to accidentally screw up the game

@GamerInGeorgia I'm glad you enjoyed it! The game is heavily inspired by the GBA-era Fire Emblem games, especially Sacred Stones and FE7.

I can't promise we'll have fancy battle animations like those in the official FE games. This would be a moderate amount of work on the programming side, and a massive amount of work on the spriting side. Even the NES games have a lot of detail in those animations. Also, a lot of players choose to disable these animations anyway. However, I'm planning to add better visual and audible feedback for the battles.

If you'd like to make some sprites and get a cameo, that would be awesome indeed!

@littlelum Good catch! I fixed this bug.

@fireball3k You're almost right - but that would live in a different file! But yeah, I'm glad that you've let me use you a sounding board for my thoughts on MFGG Emblem and Fire Emblem in Real Life Team Projects™.

@Cruise Elroy Thanks! You won't need a PhD in SRPG Strategy to play this - this game will never reach Thracia 776 difficulty! Unless I add an optional Lunatic++ mode...

I definitely love the icon for the game.

I'm not big on the Fire Emblem games myself but it seems like you've got a fairly sound framework here! Good luck with the rest.
Falcon Punch is the result of the Sun heating fists. It drives the Blue Falcon. Heating causes destruction of water into the pain, where it then hurts, creating rain. Rain creates flowing water in tears, which can then be converted into other forms through more pain.

I'll say that I wasn't really expecting this to show up (and I don't mean it in a bad way). I have checked out the demo some time ago, where I got through chapter 1 and checked out the other chapters just to see what their premises are and what are their map layouts like. I liked what I have seen. The chapter stories are neat; I'm looking forward to seeing the rest. Wink

Giving this a bumpety-bump because there's been a surge in interest in MFGG lore lately. This is one of the relatively few "games about MFGG" that have been made in recent years, even if this one is crawling with bugs!

I haven't done much with this game in recent months, but I'm still interested in adding more chapters. If you'd like to see this happen, feel free to share more sprites, art, and ideas, and you might just see them in the next version of this!
