Mario - Cake Attack!!
Controls (can be changed from the options menu in game):
-arrow keys: move mario right and left, enter/exit crawl mode, and look up
-x key: jump
-z key: hold to run
-p key: pause/unpause

Game includes 2 ost modes: SC88 and BS (bandstand). The engine is a custom one built from the ground up in sdl2 with custom assets. also, the game is very very hard, the level designs aren't the best and are unfair at times. the main mechanic is lookout mode, where peach wakes up to surveil the castle for any signs of mario. it is indicated to by the blue tint fading out gradually. once it begins, a yellow light is emitted, and it travels throughout the room back and forth. enter crawl mode and you should be safe when the light hits mario. if you aren't in crawl mode, mario will die and loose a life. you have 5 lives to complete 4 levels each composing of 2 rooms. couldn't add all the levels i wanted to, but i think what is here should keep you busy for a few minutes. hope you guys enjoy it!

to complete a level, collect the cake at the end of the second room. the first one is obscured a bit by the hud, it's in the top left corner.
I definitely agree on the "very very hard" part. I like the graphics and music, but the difficulty just makes it annoying to play (and the wind pipes (or whatever they are) are one of the most annoying obstacles I've ever seen in a game).

Also, is this jump actually doable, or are you supposed to jump over the top wall to the other side?

The wind pipes were a more last minute addition, i originally wanted to turn them into pea shooters but due to time constraints, i opted for this. You're meant to use them to build up momentum in later rooms to make some large jumps. the jump in room 4 is possible, you have to build momentum on the tile before the spike to make it.

Mario Cake Attack is a really cute concept, but I agree with Roo that it's unreasonably difficult. I would highly recommend adding a visual cue for the fans. The game would also benefit from scrapping the lives system and giving players unlimited lives/continues - especially if you add more levels.

Yeah, I'm gonna change the level designs and wind pipe mechanic in the finalized release. the lives system I think I'll make optional in case someone wants an added challenge, and the main mechanic I feel ended up being under-utilized and more of an added annoyance. Thanks for the feedback!

Not quite as good as I'd hoped to make it, but hey, it's still something. Might do an expanded version, or a sequel, or an original game with a similar idea. Who knows.

I just finished playing your entry. Love the concept and the execution, the levels are really fun to traverse (although I kind of felt the grappling hook mechanic wasn't utilized to its fullest potential). My only nitpicks would be the hitboxes on some obstacles. This was apparent to me in floor 5, in the section where the laser and round light were mixed together. I felt the hitbox on the laser especially was a bit too large (made the section a bit frustrating to get through). Also the repeated backtracking in later floors felt a little needless and frustrating at times. Having to deal with the gates constantly felt like an annoyance too (albeit a relatively minor one). I think that maybe making it so that you collected all the items and then had to backtrack once or simply getting rid of the gates would've been a better decision. Good job, love what you were able to get done!

Those are good pieces of criticism and I agree with pretty much all of them. My game was definitely also a victim of the dreaded Not Enough Time Syndrome. If I ever make anything more with the concept, I'm probably making it a lot more streamlined.

Something I forgot to mention in my initial post is that i've left the map editor i made for the game and the game's source files in the folder. In case anyone wishes to make their own edits to the levels, you could use those. The editor has a command line interface and is quite crude, I'll definitely include a guide for that in a later release.
